$14K in suspected fentanyl seized after vehicle stopped in Webbwood

MCKERROW - On May 13, 2020 at approximately 10:44 p.m., members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) initiated a vehicle stop on Highway 17 in McKerrow. The vehicle was suspected to be carrying drugs.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop for the officers and was driving dangerously before stopping in Webbwood.

Further investigation revealed the driver to be in possession of a substance suspected to be fentanyl, street value of approximately $14,000, and Canadian currency.

Shimon James, 26 years old, of Mississauga was arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin) contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
    •    Dangerous operation contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code CC,
    •    Flight from peace officer contrary to section 320.17 of the CC,
    •    Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC,
    •    Criminal negligence cause bodily harm contrary to section 221 of the CC,
    •    Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC (2 counts),
    •    Race a motor vehicle - excessive speed contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA),
    •    Litter highway contrary to section 180 of the HTA, and
    •    Fail to comply with an order made during a declared emergency - non-essential business contrary to Ontario Regulation 82/20 section 7.0.11(1) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA).

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on July 20, 2020.
