Two face charges in death of a child

ELLIOT LAKE - Two people are facing criminal charges in relation to the death of a child on Dec. 14, 2016 at a residence in the City of Elliot Lake. An investigation was conducted with members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Algoma Detachment, East Algoma (Elliot Lake) Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Services (FIS), under the direction of Detective Inspector Mark Zulinski, of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and in assistance with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old female from Elliot Lake, Ont., was charged with:  

  • Causing Death by Criminal Negligence, contrary to section 220(b) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • Fail to Provide Necessaries of Life, contrary to section 215(2)(a)(ii) of the CC.

A 38-year-old male from Elliot Lake, Ont., was charged with:

  • Fail to Provide Necessaries of Life, contrary to section 215(2) (a)(ii) of the CC.

Both accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Nov. 2, 2017.
