Toy drive tradition continues

The Salvation Army is still looking for volunteers to help with dispersing the toys

Once again, Elliot Lake residents have proven their hearts are in the holiday giving mood.

On Dec. 7 and 8, Moose FM held a radio-a-thon in support of the Salvation Army's Christmas Kids Toy Drive. For two days, residents were able to donate and pledge a donation to the radio-a-thon to help purchase toys for 250 children in the area who are in need of a smile come Christmas morning.

In total, $16,957 was pledged, with $10,500 already collected for the toy drive to date. Also, over 200 toys were collected and helped Constable Phil Young's cruiser get stuffed.

"Money raised helps with every day things for these families," said Salvation Army Captain Sean Furey. "The children will get the gifts on Dec. 15."

This toy drive has been happening in the area for more than 27 years with the adaptation of the radio-a-thon coming into play in 2001-2002, according to Furey.

This year, the need is greater in babies and toddlers as well as children ages 10-12. The Salvation Army helps families not only in Elliot Lake, but also in Blind River, Serpant River and the Spanish area.

Moose FM radio host Bob Alexander expressed the need for Elliot Lake to help those children in need.

"We need your help to make their Christmas day brighter," he said during the radio-a-thon. "Please open up your hearts and help the children."

Throughout the final day of the toy drive, Constable Young volunteered his time to fill up his cruiser and enjoyed his time filling up car with teddy bears and infant toys.

"This is great for the community," expressed Constable Young. "This will help so many children."

The Salvation Army is still looking for volunteers to help with dispersing the toys. If you are looking at volunteering, contact Furey at 705-849-2714 or 705-208-0771.

"Please honour your pledge," Captain Furey explains. "It goes a long way."
