Thousands brave heat for hot cars (29 photos)

Elliot Lake's North Shore Challenge brought several thousand drag racing fans to the Elliot Lake Airport Dragway on Saturday

They arrived by the dozens, by car and by bus, big trucks and even on motorcycles.

By midday Saturday several thousand drag racing fans were on site at Elliot Lake Airport Dragway (municipal airport) for the 19th 92.7 Rock North Shore Challenge presented by Northern Superior Brewing Company.

Temperatures hovered in the high 20s with humidex values soaring well into the 30s. Sunscreen and cool beverages were the order of the weekend following the kickoff burnout competition in the parking lot at Lyle's No Frills Thursday night. Events wrapped up on Sunday.

Racing categories included super pro, semi-pro, snowmobile/motorcycle, King of Street and junior pro. Saturday's payout for super pro racing was $10,000, Sunday's prize cashed out at $5,000. The top semi-pro prize each day was $2,000. According to City of Elliot Lake special events coordinator Darla Hennessey, official competition results will be released in a few days.

There were two funny cars in the lineup, Diesel Dave's Pure Insanity and Jordan Parniak's Wild Child. The other headliner was the amazing jet car Northern Warrior presented by Neale Armstrong. It can reach speeds over 350 kph.

Another feature of this year's North Shore Challenge was Saturday's Show 'n' Shine presented by the North Shore Cruisers Car Club. There were prizes for several categories of show cars including many vintages, dating back to the 1950s.

While this year's show was a partnership of the City of Elliot Lake and the North Shore Cruisers, as always the races were conducted by Arnie Malcolm from Luskville who heads up ADM Motorsports. Malcolm has been the event promoter since its inception in 1999. The North Shore Challenge is the longest running airport drag race held in Ontario.
