Local church hopes to score with new ball hockey nights (11 photos)

Not everybody can afford to play on ice, but Gentle Shepherd Church hopes it can offer 'the next best thing' in its basement

They shoot, they score.

Gentle Shepherd Church is hosting recreational ball hockey every Tuesday from 7:30-9:30 pm. The cost to play is $2 per evening per player. Sticks are provided and the game is played in the basement gym.

Ashton Hanna, event organizer, said that they’re trying these evenings out to see if any interest is sparked among the community to come out and make friends. Residents are able to drop-in to try the sport out.

“We are playing pick-up (hockey) right now,” she said. “I’m hoping to have enough interest to start it as a league like the baseball and volleyball leagues in town."

She said she decided to start the program to help people without the money to get involved in ice hockey.

“I just figured there are some people who can’t afford to play ice hockey and this is the next best thing,” she said.

Right now, she said the age group that can play are aged 15 and up but Hanna said if there is enough interest among younger players, she will make time for them as well.

Hanna also said that if you’re interested in playing and have goalie equipment, it will be welcomed with open arms. The church has goalie equipment but according to Hanna, there is “not enough.”
