The Elliot Lake Aquatic Club (ELAC) is hosting a swim meet this weekend, Jan. 19 and 20, at the Ruben Yli-Juuti pool with 31 of its members participating.

Publicity director Shawn Beaulieu said the meet will see teams from the Sault Surge Aquatic Club, Valley East Waves and Nickel City Aquatics Club also taking part. The meet is part of the northwestern Ontario region.

“Swimmers will compete in both individual events ranging from 50 metre swims to 800 metre events,” he told ElliotLakeToday. “Swimmers are placed in groups based on age, 10-and-under, and 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, and 15-and-over. There will also be relay events which are often exciting as a group of four swimmers compete for the best time.”

ELAC is the longest active swim club in the region, swimming in its 42nd season. It currently has 58 swimmers, according to Beaulieu.

“Recognizing the amount of work it takes to keep this club running, we are extremely fortunate to function primarily as a volunteer driven organization,” Beaulieu noted.

“Ribbons will be handed out for first through sixth place in individual events and first to third place for relays,” he said.

The public is invited to attended with a canteen open for spectators.

The meet begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday and runs until 4 p.m. before resuming at 9:30 a.m. Sunday with action wrapping up at 1 p.m.
