Sun shines as locals celebrate Canada Day

After today's festivities, Saturday will see the city host the Uranium Heritage Festival

There was plenty to celebrate for Elliot Lake residents and visitors on Canada Day.

With warm, sunny weather people were out in droves with the Spruce Beach Party a particular attraction with games for the young and young at heart, sandcastle building, races, fishing, recreational climbing facilities and swings. Also held on the day was a home decorating contest with residents urged to fly their flags to celebrate Canada’s birthday.

Swimmers, boaters and jet skis were in the water with some swimmers taking the plunge off the landmark rock off Spruce Beach.

Mayor Dan Marchisella cooked up hotdogs along with other members of council and city staff.

The day will wrap up with a fireworks display set off over the lake from the north industrial park and can be best viewed from Westview Park or the beach. They are expected to start around 9 p.m. It is also suggested those attending bring along bug repellent.

On Saturday for the Uranium Heritage Festival there will be an outdoor street dance and concert at the arena parking lot featuring performances by internationally celebrated artist Jess  Moskaluke and award winning country music artist George Canyon.

The concert will also feature opening acts by local Elliot Lake talent The Shed Jammers and The Tarvelles.

Tickets at the door are $50. There will be a cash bar and snacks.
