Student project became beacon of hope in lockdown

Chapleau Catholic students engage in community creative writing initiative, create intergenerational connections

Teacher Michelle Morin and her students engaged in an exercise in creative writing in the last academic school year, from last February to June, (2021) in Chapleau.

The high school students at Ecole catholique Trillium (Chapleau) immersed themselves in the world of creative writing with an exercise in intergenerational communication.

There was an exchange of letters written in English between students and people from the community of Chapleau.

During the semester students found time to handwrite and exchange letters, personalizing each one.

The community exchange ended up being a lot more than just an exchange of letters. The words written on paper made even the mundane act of checking the mail and normally finding a few bills being transformed into the occasion for a few smiles from the recipients.

In fact, Morin says those letters ended up being beacons of hope during lengthy lockdown periods during the pandemic.

Last June the initiative culminated when each student had a chance to meet their respective pen pals (while respecting social distancing measures, of course).

The school is part of the education system of Sudbury-based Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon.
