Splash pad at Kiwanis Park now open

And it could stay open for up to two weeks if the warm weather continues

Elliot Lake residents can breathe a sigh of relief: the splash pad at Kiwanis Park (Rio Den arena) is officially open for business.

The $150,000 investment was requested by the Youth Advisory Committee in 2016 and Mayor Dan Marchisella said that after the request was submitted, he brought the idea up to the Budget Committee for discussion.

“Every year, funds are put towards activities and entertainment for our senior population, our council committed to put funds towards family and youth initiatives yearly, also,” he said. “Our Youth Advisory Committee requested a splash pad in 2016, which I brought to our budget committee for discussion. After much debate and realizing the commitment to make better parks instead of more parks, in addition to this type of infrastructure being fully accessible and usable by all ages, our council approved the build.”

As for the other activities that happen at the park, Marchisella said the baseball field and playground will not be affected by the splash pad and that it is now up and running for users.

With an extra-curricular activity for others to enjoy, the question the community had concerning this splash pad was the cost for maintenance and repairs, which Marchisella said would be very minimal.

“The budget amount was $150,000 (to build). Its low maintenance, just requires man hours to turn water on and off and flush lines when required,” he said.

As for an official grand opening, he said come Spring time, the public can come together for the announcement.

“We hope to have an official opening come Spring,” he said. “No discussion has been made about dedication (for the park.)

The splash pad will remain open for two weeks weather permitting and will re-open in early spring.
