Red Wings storm back to upend Rock

Elliot Lake scored five times in the third period before winning in a shootout

After picking up a 6-3 win Friday night in Kirkland Lake, the Elliot Lake Red Wings needed a shootout to gain victory in Timmins on Saturday.

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League fell behind 4-0 through 40 minutes before storming back to beat the Timmins  Rock 6-5. 

In the only first period scoring, Yenry Jibb gave the Rock a 1-0 lead with three minutes left in the frame.

In the second period, Timmins forward Nicholas Frederick scored his fifth goal of the season, putting the puck past Cameron Smith in the Red Wings net at 2:40. 

Playing shorthanded, Frederick came back with his second marker of the night at 5:07 to make it 3-0.

With 1:18 left in the frame, Jibb picked up his second goal of the night to extend the lead further.

The Red Wings finally put the puck past Rock goalie Jacob Brown when Zachary Vickerman beat him at 5:05 of the third period. 

Calum McGill then cut into the Timmins lead further, beating Brown at 5:52.

Less than three minutes later, Lucas Piekarczyk answered back for Timmins at 8:42, beating Elliot Lake goaltender Sean Guerin, who replaced Smith to start the period.

The Red Wings responded 16 seconds later as Silas Crawford made it 5-3.

Elliot Lake cut the Timmins lead to one goal 43 seconds after that as Vickerman scored his second goal of the night.

The tying goal for Elliot Lake was scored by Tomas Palandra at 11:49.

After a scoreless overtime period, Alex Antoine and Kaden Laverdiere scored in the shootout to give the Red Wings the come-from-behind victory.

Guerin got the win for Elliot Lake after entering the game in relief of Smith.

Brown suffered the loss.

Vickerman finished the night with goals and an assist while Crawford, Palandra, and MCGill have one of each.

With the win, the Red Wings improve to 3-4-0-0 while Timmins falls to 4-3-0-1. 

Other Saturday night games in the NOJHL saw the Soo Thunderbirds blank the Cochrane Crunch 4-0, the Blind River Beavers double up the Gold Miners in Kirkland Lake, 4-2, and the French River Rapids dropping a 5-2 decision against the Espanola Paper Kings.

Next up for the Red Wings is a game against the Beavers on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Blind River Community Centre.
