Red Wings score early, late in win over Express

The Elliot Lake Red Wings got off to fast start at home in their matinee Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matchup Sunday against the Espanola Express.

Then they rolled to a 4-2 victory. 

Red Wings captain Dayton Clarke scored for his tenth season goal against Patrick Boivin in the net for the Express, at 3:46 of the first period to kick-start the scoring.

There was nothing more until the second period when Express forward Jack Thor slid into the Red Wings goal crease to get the puck past Cameron Smith, between the pipes for Elliot Lake, at 5:53.

Espanola's Ben Couvier came through with another goal for the Express at 15:00, on the power play.

Red Wings foward Matthew Shulist finished the second period scoring with his sixth season goal at 17:55 sending the game into the third tied at two.

At 1:06 of the third the fired up Elliot Lake squad came through with the go-ahead goal from Jovani Moses.

Elliot Lake got its insurance marker from Shulist when he blasted in his second of the afternoon, at 2:13.

Smith picked up the win in goal, stopping 39 of the 41 Espanola shots that came his way.

Boivin was tagged for the loss after thwarting 26 of the 30 Red Wings pucks he faced.

Around the NOJHL, Sunday afternoon, the French River Rapids topped the Cochrane Crunch 3-2 in a shootout and the Hearst Lumberjacks doubled up the Timmins Rock 6-3.

Next up, the Red Wings host Blind Rivers Beavers on Friday (Dec 3) at 7 p.m. at Centennial Arena.
