NOJHL action between the Elliot Lake Red Wings and Espanola Express.

The Espanola Express took the early lead and never looked back in a Sunday afternoon Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matchup with the Elliot Lake Red Wings at Centennial Arena.

The Express scoring got started in the opening period when Todd McBain scored unassisted at 11:46

Kobe Braham extended the Espanola lead with his sixth goal of the season at 15:57.

Red Wings goalie Colton Donaldson was busy in the opening period, stopping 17 Express shots.

Heading into the second period with the Express leading 2-0, Ty McHutchion scored the first of three goals on the afternoon for Espanola at 7:55.

Skilled forward James Eng extended the Espanola lead to 4-0 with a power play goal at 12:32 and proceeded to pick up his second goal of the night less than five minutes later.

The Red Wings got on the board in the final minute of the second period as Cole Kimble scored his second goal of the season to make the score 5-1 Espanola heading into the third.

A goaltending change for the Red Wings that saw Ryder Gregga replace Colton Donaldson between the pipes for the third period failed to thwart the offensive barrage by Espanola.

Just 1:24 into the third, McHutchion got his second goal of the night for Espanola to extend the lead.

Defenceman Owen Harris got on the scoreboard with a power play for Espanola at 8:21 and McHutchion capped off the Express scoring with his third of the night at 12:22, also on the power play.

Red Wings forward Josh Tomasi scored a shorthanded goal at 16:04 of the third to cap off the scoring.

Express netminder Boivin earned the win, stopping 24 of the 26 Red Wings shots he faced.

Donaldson was tagged with the loss for the Red Wings in goal, stopping 28 shots in two periods of work. Gregga made 12 saves in the final period.

McHutchion finished the night with an assist in addition to his three goals while Josh Boucher assisted on three Espanola goals. Giovanni Perillo assisted on a pair of goals for the Express.

In other games around the NOJHL on Sunday, the Soo (Mich) Eagles blanked the Soo Thunderbirds 3-0 and the Timmins Rock beat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-1.

The next game for the Red Wings will be played Wednesday night in Sault Ste. Marie against the Thunderbirds at 7 p.m.
