The Ontario government’s announced extension of its stay-at-home order means the Elliot Lake Red Wings Junior “A” hockey team is postponing its planned evaluation camp.

Premier Doug Ford announced the tentative extension of the order until June 2.

Team head coach Brian Noad said the extension means the camp will be held from June 17 to June 20. It was originally set for June 10 to June 13.

“We feel it’s best to move our camp to June 17-20,” Noad said today after the provincial announcement. “We want to be safe and keep Elliot Lake residents safe.”

Covid-19 restrictions after June 2 will depend on whether pandemic numbers dip by that time. The province’s chief medical officer David Williams said today that a gradual reopening could take place if the numbers dip below 1,000 daily cases.

The new camp schedule will also depend on what the city decides about allowing Centennial arena to open with ice for the three days based on provincial guidelines after June 2.

The original camp plan will not change with 78 players set to attend. The players and goalies will have both on ice and land training. They will be accommodated at the Hampton Inn.

“Everything else remains the same,” Noad added. “We will follow Covid restrictions.”

The team is part of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL).
