Red Wings can't hold off late rally by Eagles

A trio of goals in the third period was the difference as the Soo (Mich.) Eagles came from behind to beat the Elliot Lake Red Wings 5-4 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Centennial Arena locally on Saturday night.

The teams traded goals in the opening period as Eagles foward Marc LaFrance notched his sixth goal of the season 3:10 into the contest before Elliot Lake forward Alex Antoine tied the game at one at 12:34 of the frame.

The Red Wings went ahead 19 seconds into the second period when Devin Shoreman found the back of the Eagles net  to put the home team ahead.

Midway through the period Ethan Mercer gave the Red Wings a two-goal cushion when he beat Eagles goaltender Gabe Rosek at 10:29.

Chase Tallaire pulled the Eagles to within one with 17 seconds to go in the second period with his first of two goals on the night.

Brodie Kearns restored the two-goal lead for the Red Wings 1:28 into the third with his eighth goal of the season.

Tallaire again pulled the Eagles to within one at 6:48.

Tyler Culleton then tied the game for the Eagles at 11:56 before forward Brian Fiddes scored the winner at 17:53.

Rosek picked up the win in goal for the Eagles, stopping 36 of 40 Red Wings shots in the game.

Red Wings goaltender Colton Donaldson turned aside 44 of the 49 pucks sent his way by the Eagles. 

Tallaire finsihed the night with two goals and an assist offensively for the Eagles while Seth Ferguson assisted on a pair of goals.

Antoine, Mercer, and Kearns had a goal and an assist each for the Red Wings.

Elsewhere in the NOJHL Saturday night, the Greater Sudbury Cubs dumped the Blind River Beavers 5-2, the Hearst Lumberjacks topped the French River Rapids 6-4, and the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners thumped the Powassan Voodoos 7-4.

Next up for the Red Wings is a home-ice encounter Sunday afternoon against the Espanola Express at Centennial Arena. Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m.
