Red Wings blank Rapids in return home

Following two road victories this week over Cochrane and Kirkland Lake at the Northern Ontario Junior League Showcase in Sudbury, the Elliot Lake Red Wings returned home in fine fashion

The locals scored an impressive Friday night victory by blanking the French River Rapids 6-0 at Centennial Arena.

Braden Twigg drew first blood in the first period scoring for the home team at 13:57.

It wasn't until 9:31 of the second period that Red Wings defenceman Thomas Sefton put the puck past Kaleb Papineau in the Rapids net again for his first goal of the season.

Charlie Wesholowski made it 3-0 Red Wings at 13:20 of the second.

Silas Crawford kept the home team scoring spree going at 14:27, with his seventh of the season.

Kaden Laverdiere scored his third goal of the season at 12:47 of the third period to make it 5-0 and Sefton completed the scoring with his second of the night, at 15:02.

Papineau stopped 36 shots for the Rapids..

In addition to the two-point night for Sefton with a pair of goals, Wesholowski added a goal and an assist for Elliot Lake while Ethan Mercer picked up a pair of helpers.

The Red Wings are 6-5-0-0 on the season.  

The Rapids sit at 2-8-O-0.

Other Friday night play saw the Timmins Rock blank the Cochrane Crunch 7-0;  the Espanola Paper Kings dumped the Powassan Voodoos 4-1; and the Soo (Mich.) Eagles beat the Soo Thunderbirds 3-2 in a shootout.

Next up for the Red Wings a trip to Espanola next Friday night where they face the Paper Kings.
