Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reports two new cases of COVID-19 for today, June 17.

PHSD also said there are now 198 active cases being monitored by public health officials.

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases, there have been 2,128 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,109 of those cases have now been resolved.

With respect to where the newest COVID-19 cases might have occurred, the PHSD daily update page reported that two cases were found in the Greater Sudbury area.

In terms of possible causes of the new and recent cases, PHSD reported one case travel related, and one case is under investigation.

PHSD also reports general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 695total cases (an increase of two).

The next highest group number was 543 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (an increase of two).

The next highest number was 495 cases for the 19 and under age group (and increase of two).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 300 cases total (no increase), and people aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 94 cases (no increase).

There were also no cases reported in the "unspecified category".

The numbers above may not completely correspond with the daily case count because PHSD does not always report changes on the day they occur.

With respect to COVID-19 testing, 256,845 tests have been performed in the PHSD region as of June 17, an increase of 411 since the last PHSD test report.

As for local vaccinations, PHSD reported a total of 146,350 vaccines given in the entire PHSD area as of June 17 at 4 p.m. Of those, 113,811 people have received their first dose, while 32,539 are fully vaccinated. In terms of wasted doses, PHSD reports 185 doses wasted, or 0.13 per cent of the total. Public Health Sudbury has received 152,690 total doses as of June 17.

PHSD is also reporting there are six cases of "confirmed" variants of the COVID-19 virus. No change there after several days.

There are 940 cases that are "screened positive" for variants of concern, with no increase in 24 hours.

PHSD said additional time is required to genetically sequence the virus in a positive sample and confirm it as a COVID-19 variant of concern.

PHSD has also reported there is one active outbreak in the area, at Flying Post Camp Logistics at the IAMGOLD - Cote Lake Mine Project, near Highway 144 just North of the Watershed. It was declared on June 12.
