Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reported seven new cases of COVID-19 for today, May 2

Public Health also said there are now 80 active cases being monitored by public health, an increase of three from yesterday.

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 13 months ago, there have been 1,960 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally (this includes the corrected information from the April 28 report). PHSD also said 1,880 of those cases have now been resolved, an increase of four over Saturday. Twenty-seven people have died in the region since the pandemic was declared.

With respect to where the newest COVID-19 cases might have occurred, the PHSD daily update page reported that five cases were found to have occurred within Greater Sudbury, while two were in Sudbury District.

In terms of possible causes of the new and recent cases, PHSD reported two cases were linked to close contact of a confirmed case. One case was travel related, and four cases remain under investigation. None were linked to an outbreak.

PHSD also reports general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 637 total cases (an increase of one).

The next highest group number was 494 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (an increase of one).

The next highest number was 455 cases for the 19 and under age group (an increase of two).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 283 cases total (an increase of two), and people aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 90 cases (no change). There were also one case reported in the "unspecified category".

The numbers above may not completely correspond with the daily case count because PHSD does not always report changes on the day they occur.

In terms of COVID-19 testing, 235,604 tests have been performed in the PHSD region as of Wednesday, April 28. The numbers were not updated as of Sunday.

As for local vaccinations, PHSD reported a total of 78,791 vaccines given in the entire PHSD area as of April 29 at 4 p.m. Of those, 70,871 have received their first dose, while 7,920 are fully vaccinated. These data have not been updated since Thursday.

Variants of concern

PHSD is also reporting six cases of "confirmed" variants of the COVID-19 virus. There are 804 cases that are "screened positive" for variants of concern, an increase of 15 over Friday.

PHSD said additional time is required to genetically sequence the virus in a positive sample and confirm it as a COVID-19 variant of concern.

At Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of April 30, there are 20 patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital. As reported on the HSN website, this included 11 COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In addition to this, there are 12 admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. None of those patients has been admitted to the ICU at this time.

On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 3,732 new confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 23 new deaths had occurred in the previous 24 hours with 3,947 recoveries.
