Firefighters continue to battle 40 forest fires across the northeast, five of which are burning out of control.

The remaining 35 fires are classified as being held, under control being observed.

As of Aug. 14, there are no new fires to report. One fire has also been classified as extinguished.

The Parry Sound 33 fire hasn’t grown since yesterday, but it hasn’t gotten any smaller either. It continues to burn 11,362 hectares of forest. People who live in the area will continue to see smoke drifting for the next few days, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reported today.

In the Lady Evelyn fire cluster, the huge North Bay 72 fire is being held, and remains at 27,285 hectares in size. Helicopter bucketing continues to support ground crews.

While there are no new fires to report, conditions in the bush remain very dry, the MNRF reports, and so restricted fire zones remain in place in many parts of the province.

Restricted fire zones remain in place north of Rosseau, northwest to Espanola and Cartier, over to the Quebec border including Temagami and Mattawa north of the Mattawa River. This includes Parry Sound, Burk’s Falls, Powassan, North Bay and Greater Sudbury.

In order to ensure MNRF and emergency officials are able to continue fire suppression operations in areas affected by large forest fires, the travel restrictions put in place by the ministry remain in place near the Parry Sound 33, North Bay 72 and Pembroke 6 forest fires.

These restrictions are in place to ensure public safety and the safety of emergency personnel working in the affected areas. For information on travel restrictions and travel permits, please call 1-888-220-7242.
