Ontario reports 538 new COVID-19 cases today

Majority of new cases are in Toronto and Peel Region

Ontario Public Health has confirmed 538 new COVID-19 cases today in the province, which is down from yesterday's report. 

The province hit a high-water mark for new daily cases earlier this week with 700 on Monday. That number fell to 554 on Tuesday and then jumped again to 625 on Wednesday.

Three more deaths attributed to the virus were also announced today, two of whom were residents in long-term care facilities. That brings the oveall death toll in Ontario to 2,851 since the pandemic began. 

There have been 52,248 cases confirmed in the province and 44,422 of those have been resolved. 

Public health officials are also reporting that 515 people have recovered from the virus since last report. 

There are 4,975 active cases in Ontario. 

Of today's 538 new cases today, 229 were reported by Toronto Public Health, 101 by Peel Public Health, 66 by Ottawa Public Health, and another 43 by York Region Public Health. 

Since yesterday's report, 39,646 new tests have been completed in the previous 24-hour period, bringing the provincial total to more than 3.9 million. Of those, 82,473 remain under investigation. 

There are 162 hospitalized with COVID-19, 36 of whom are in intenstive care. Seventeen patients are on ventilators. 

In September, 49 COVID-19 cases were reported by Northern Ontario health units. That's a jump from August, when 19 cases were reported.

The breakdown for the health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 32 cases, rate of 28 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 33 cases. There are three known active cases. In September, Algoma recorded five new cases. That’s an increase from August, when there was one new positive test.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 38 cases, rate of 29.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 40 cases. There are no known active cases. In September, five new cases were recorded. In August, no new cases were reported.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 83, rate of 99.5 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases. In September, 10 new cases were reported, including the first instances of the virus on the James Bay coast. In August, there were two positive tests. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 108 cases, rate of 54.3 per 100,000 population. There are six known active cases. In September, 14 new cases were reported. That’s an increase from August, when six new cases were recorded.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. There are two known active cases. Two new cases were reported in September, which is an increase from August when there was no change to the numbers. Earlier this week, the health unit revised its COVID-19 case count. While it had been sitting at 19, three cases were removed because their home addresses were in other jurisdictions.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 53 cases, rate of 60.5 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 55 cases and one probable case. There are six known active cases. In September, nine new cases were reported. That’s a jump from August when two positive tests were confirmed.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 107 cases, rate of 71.4 per 100,000. There are three known active cases. Four news cases of the virus were reported in September, which is a drop from August when eight cases were reported.

The Ontario rate of infection is 351.5.
