Ontario reports 3,295 new COVID cases Thursday

Today's report includes 2,576 recoveries, 19 deaths, and 134 new hospitalizations

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,295 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 8).

Today's report includes 2,576 recoveries and 19 new deaths.  

The deaths reported today include three people between 40 and 59 years old, 12 people between 60 and 79 years old, and four people over the age of 79 years old.

The province has reported 134 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 32 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The April 8 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 28,059 active cases, which is up from 27,359 yesterday
  • 1,417 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,397 reported yesterday. 
  • There are  525 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 504 yesterday) and  331 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 311 reported yesterday)
  • The province reported 63,846 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a six per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 42,404 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 12.9 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 3,295 new cases reported today, 933 are from Toronto, 649 cases are from Peel, 386 are from York Region, and 124 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 66 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 49 at retirement homes, and 42 at hospitals. 
  • The new cases reported today include 602 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,280 people between 20 and 39 years old, 953 people between 40 and 59 years old, 399 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 68 people aged 80 and over.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)

  • 9,632 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • 75 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 131 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 

Vaccines

  • There were 108,563 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 7, which is up from 104,382 doses on April 6.
  • As of 6 p.m. on April 7, the province reported 2,834,784 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 326,360 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 374,112 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 338,559 recoveries and 7,494 deaths, of which 3,904 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,516.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 131.7 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 26.3 per cent from last week (March 23-29). 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 251 cases, rate of 219.3 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 253 cases. There are 27 known active cases. There are three confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant of concern. One test has screened positive for a variant of concern but the strain is not known yet. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 302 cases, rate of 232.8 per 100,000 people. There are 13 known active cases. There have been eight confirmed cases of the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) variant, and 27 confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are 21 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 384 cases, rate of 460.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 385 cases. There are 29 known active cases. There have been two confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are two tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,588 cases, rate of 797.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,600. There are 270 known active cases. There are five confirmed UK (B.1.1.7) variants of concern. There are 455 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 129 cases, rate of 394.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 131 cases. There are seven known active cases. There have been 19 confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There has been one case of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There is one test where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 720 cases, rate of 821.2 per 100,000 people. There are 43 known active cases. There are six confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There are 14 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 2,929 cases, rate of 1953.2 per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 2,937 cases. There are 104 known active cases. There are four tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet.
