Ontario reports 2,662 new COVID cases today

Active cases, hospitalizations and weekly incidence rate are all trending downward based on provincial reporting

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,662 new cases of COVID-19 today.

The province is also reporting 87 deaths today, including 43 people who were residents at long-term care homes.

The deaths reported today include one person between 40 and 59 years old, 26 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 60 people over the age of 80. 

Ontario reports 185 new COVID-related hospitalizations and 17 new admissions to intensive care. 

The Jan. 22 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 3,375 new recoveries
  • 25,263 active cases, which is down from 26,063 yesterday
  • 1,512 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,533 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 383 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 388 yesterday) and 291 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 293 yesterday).
  • The province reported 71,750 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 3.3 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There is a backlog of 41,819 tests. To date, 9,196,591 tests have been completed.
  • Of the 2,662 cases reported today, 779 are from Toronto, 542 are from Peel, 228 are from York Region, and 71 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 252 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 164 at retirement homes and 97 at hospitals. 
  • Of the cases reported today there are 329 people under 19 years old, 927 people between 20 and 39 years old, 805 people between 40 and 59 years old, 410 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 193 people over the age of 80. 

 Vaccine update for Jan. 21: 

  • There were 11,168 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Jan. 21, down from 15,899 on Jan. 20.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Jan. 21, the province reports 264,985 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • There are 49,292 total vaccinations completed (both doses). The vaccines approved for use require two doses a few weeks apart.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 250,226 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 219,262 recoveries and 5,701 deaths, of which 3,350 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,683.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. 

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 132.8 cases per 100,000 people from Jan. 12 to Jan. 18, which is a decrease of 18.7 per cent compared to Jan. 6 to Jan. 12 when the average weekly incidence rate was 163.3 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 149 cases, rate of 130.2 per 100,000 people. There are 28 known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 185 cases, rate of  142.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 186 cases. There are five known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 193 cases, rate of 231.3 per 100,000 people. There are 29 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 425 cases, rate of 213.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 417 cases. There are 70 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 85 cases, rate of 260 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 86 cases. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 237 cases, rate of 270.3 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 240 cases. There are 12 known active cases. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 811 cases, rate of 540.8 per 100,000 people. There are 128 known active cases.

The Ontario government has declared a state of emergency, the second since the start of the pandemic, and a stay at-home order is in effect until at least Feb. 11, 2021. There are additional measures in place for the shutdown, all of which can be found in this provincial breakdown.
