For the second day in a row, the province has confirmed more than 400 new cases of COVID-19. Today the province has reported 407 new cases, and yesterday it reported 401 new cases.
The province has confirmed one new death related to COVID-19, an individual over the age of 80.
Of today's 407 new cases, 218 are individuals between the ages of 20 and 39 years old, and another 72 are youth aged 19 and under.
According to a breakdown of today's new cases provided by Public Health Ontario, 68 per cent of the 407 cases were reported by three health units. Toronto Public Health reported 129 new cases, Peel Public Health reported 94 new cases and Ottawa reported 55 new cases.
The number of new cases reported in the province has been rising over the last five weeks.
For the week of August 9 to 15, Ontario Public Health reported 589 cases of COVID, for Aug. 30 to 5, the province reported 920 new cases. Last week, there were 1,299 new cases and this week (Sept. 13 to 19) there have been 2,184 new cases, which is a 70 per cent increase over last week.
In the first week of June (May 31 to June 6) the province reported similar case increases with 2,297 reported that week. At that time, Ontario Health was also reporting between 14,000 and 23,000 tests processed per day. The province reported 2,486 new cases during the week of March 29 to April 4 and 2,369 cases the week of May 10 to 16.
The province has reported another 38,940 COVID tests processed since last report, bringing the cumulative total to 3.5 million tests processed in the province since January. This week the province reported between 28,000 and 38,000 tests processed per day.
Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott posted a Tweet saying Ontario Health has increased capacity at eight assessment centres in Toronto, Peel and Ottawa with seven pop-up test centres launched.
To date, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 46,484 cases of COVID-19 in the province with 40,777 (87.7 per cent) of those reported recovered and 2,826 cases ending in death (6.3 per cent).
There are 2,881 active cases in the province, including 64 people who are hospitalized with COVID-19. There are 20 COVID patients in intensive care units and 10 COVID patients on ventilators.
The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:
- Algoma Public Health - 30 cases, rate of 25.3 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.
- North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 37 cases, rate of 28.5 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 39 cases. There is one known active case.
- Porcupine Health Unit - 80, rate of 94.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 79 cases. There are five known active cases.
- Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 101 cases, rate of 50.7 per 100,000 population. There are four known active cases.
- Timiskaming Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
- Northwestern Health Unit - 47 cases, rate of 52.5 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
- Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 105 cases, rate of 70 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 104 cases. There is one known active case.
The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 310.
