Ontario confirms 721 new COVID cases today

The province has reported zero new COVID-related deaths today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 721 new COVID-19 cases, zero deaths, and 783 recoveries today. 

There are 17 new hospitalizations since yesterday's report, and four more COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

Of today's new cases, there were 102 positive test results for people aged 19 and under, and 281 for people aged 20 to 39. Another 230 cases were confirmed in people aged 40 to 59. Among the results published today are six health care workers employed at long-term care homes.

Of today's 721 new cases, 39 were reported by Ottawa Public Health, 170 by Peel Public Health, 270 by Toronto Public Health, and 79 by York Region Public Health 

The province has also confirmed 96 more school-related cases, including 51 students, 13 staff, and 32 unspecified. There have been 1,040 school cases reported since students returned to school, and 645 of those cases were reported within the last 14 days. The 1,040 cases have been spread across 421 schools, and there are currently five schools closed because of COVID-19 cases. 

The provincial summary indicates public health labs have processed another 32,206 COVID tests, and the backlog of tests is lower with 26,558 tests awaiting results. The per cent positivity rate for the province is now at 2.6 per cent. Per cent positivity is the number of people who test positive compared to the number of tests processed. 

To date the province has reported 61,413 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in individuals in Ontario, and has noted 52,512 recoveries and 3,017 deaths. A recovery is reported once 14 days have passed after symptom onset and the individual did not die or is not hospitalized. 

There are 5,884 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario, including 231 patients currently hospitalized with the coronavirus. There are 64 COVID patients in intensive care and 35 COVID patients on ventilators across the province.

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 39 cases, rate of 34.1 per 100,000 population.There are five known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 40 cases, rate of 30.8 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 42 cases. There is one known active case. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 87, rate of 104.3 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 111 cases, rate of 55.8 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 17 cases. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 68 cases, rate of 77.6 per 100,000. There are five known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 109 cases, rate of 72.7 per 100,000. There is one known active case. 

The Ontario rate of infection is 413.2.

**Total cases includes the number of cases currently recovering at home as well as any that have recovered, died, or are in hospital.
