Numbers up slightly as province reports 435 new COVID cases

There were no deaths related to the coronavirus in Ontario today; There are 100 people hospitalized throughout the province with COVID-19

The number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases is up slightly over the past two days as Public Health Ontario confirmed 435 new cases today.

There are no new deaths related to COVID. To date, since the pandemic began, there have been 2,837 deaths in Ontario. 

Most of today's new cases are in the GTA including 131 cases from Toronto Public Health, while 110 cases were reported by Peel Public Health, 43 were reported in York Region and 45 were reported by Ottawa Public Health.

The cases reported today include 278 people under the age of 40. There is one new outbreak at a long-term care home, bringing the total number of outbreaks at such facilities in Ontario to 33.

Across the province, 100 people are currently hospitalized with the coronavirus; 28 of those patients are in ICU and 15 are relying on a ventilator. 

Provincial labs have now processed more than 3.76 million tests with 43,238 tests reported processed since the last report. There is a backlog of more than 68,000 tests awaiting results. 

To-date, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 49,340 COVID-19 cases in the province, and has reported 42,507 of those as recovered. 

There are 17 known active cases in Northern Ontario. 

The breakdown for the health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health - 32 cases, rate of 28 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 38 cases, rate of 29.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 40 cases. There are two known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 81, rate of 97.1 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 82 cases. There are six known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 102 cases, rate of 51.3 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 19 cases. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit - 49 cases, rate of 55.9 per 100,000. There are three known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 106 cases, rate of 70.7 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 329.
