Mayor Dan Marchisella told ElliotLakeToday Thursday night's roof collapse above the auditorium of Lester B. Pearson Community Centre on Highway 108 comes as a "surprise."

The Mayor said, "The final Building Condition Assessment Report came to Council in January of 2017. No structural issues had been identified, priority was given to foundation work at the CC as per the report. There has been no concern with this roof, no leaks, no complaints, so it comes as quite a surprise."

Three people were in the building when the roof fell in after they heard a cracking sound. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The City of Elliot Lake undertook an emergency roof cleanup of snow and ice which has built up on a number of city owned buildings including the Centennial Arena, over the winter.

Because the arena roof clearing is taking longer than expected, Friday night’s Wildcats hockey game against the Blind River Beavers will be postponed.
