There were 15 people who ran for Councillor on Elliot Lake City Council in last October's municipal election. On Wednesday nine of them can attend a meeting of the city's Compliance Audit Committee to defend against allegations of irregularity in their financial reporting which have leveled from the 2018 campaign.
Those allegations were filed in a request for a Compliance Audit, from.another one of the candidates, Mike Thomas. They will be dealt with at the Committee meeting at the Renaissance Active Living Centre at 2 Veterans Way next Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
None of the nine candidates named is obligated to attend, or send an agent. They include current Councillors Norman Mann, Chris Patrie and Sandy Finamore.
Other candidates on the list are Tammy VanRoon, Luc Morrissette, Helen Lefebvre, James Pawson, Geraldine Robinson and Frederick Henwood.
At Wednesday's meeting, the Compliance Audit Committee will first decide whether to accept Mr. Thomas' application. If it's accepted, an auditor will be appointed and proceedings will begin.
In his submission Thomas alleges all nine of the candidates on his list filed an erroneous financial statement of contributions.
"None of the candidates listed below identified a financial institution for their campaign financial transactions as required under the Municipal Election Act," said Thomas. "It is the duty of the clerk and the committee to determine the compliance, or contravention of the requirements of the Municipal Election Act."
Mr. Thomas further lists nine different shortcomings or omissions in various candidate expense reports as grounds for his requests. Originally, he named a tenth candidate, Greg Lawrence, but later withdrew that complaint.
Wednesday's Commiittee meeting at the Ren Centre is open to the public.
