The upcoming municipal election in the City of Elliot Lake is off to a slow start, with nominations just starting to trickle in.

In the first two weeks of the nomination period this year, just four candidates have registered.

Coun. Chris Patrie is the only incumbent member of council to seek re-election, but instead of trying to get back as a councillor, he’s running for mayor.

Former Elliot Lake councillor Tammy Van Roon has registered to run for a spot on council.

Two newcomers, Richard Laurin and Gary Kirk, are also nominated for the council race. Laurent, a homebuilder, registered the day after nominations opened this month and Kirk, an international market trader and consultant, filed a few days later.

There no candidates nominated for any of the school board trustee positions.

It has yet to be determined if the other remaining current councillors will seek re-election. The only one to rule it out publicly is Coun. Ed Pearce.

In April, Mayor Dan Marchisella announced to ElliotLakeToday his intention to run for re-election. He has yet to file his nomination papers.

Coun. Luc Cyr said he is not likely to run again due to family and job concerns.

That leaves current councillors Norman Mann, Tom Turner and Sandy Finamore to announce their intentions.

Residents thinking of running in the upcoming municipal election must collect 25 signatures endorsing their candidacy.

There is a $200 fee to run for mayor and a $100 fee for all other positions including school board trustee and councillor.

Anyone over the age of 18, who is a Canadian citizen and either lives in or owns property in the municipality where they are running is eligible.

Nominations close on Aug. 19, and the municipal vote is on Oct. 24.

The next term of office starts Nov. 15 and ends Nov. 14, 2026.
