Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman at council’s Monday night meeting urged parents with school-aged children to take part in the town’s Ontario Active School Travel program.

The program, announced prior to council’s last meeting in October, is meant to promote walking or biking alternatives for students going to and from school daily. It will involve the creation of a committee to develop plans to enhance safety along streets used by students and the benefits of walking. The town received a $60,000 provincial grant to undertake a program.

“At our last Council meeting we recognized the Ontario Active School Travel program,” she said in her address to council. “Tonight, I would like to let all parents and caregivers of primary school children that there is a survey on the Town of Blind River website for you to complete. This survey will help develop programs with your children in mind, so please fill it out.”

Among other announcements, the mayor stated, “Timber Village Museum in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch189 has a display Blind River remembers at the marina. This display is showing from November 6 – 16. There is an open house this Thursday evening and light refreshments are being served.”

“I’d also like to remind everyone that next Monday, Nov. 11 is Remembrance Day. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 189 will be hosting a ceremony at the Legion Hall at 10 a.m. Following the ceremony, there will be a procession to the Cenotaph which is located in Berthelot Park. The Legion will be serving a lunch following the placement of wreaths and everyone is welcome to attend,” she said.
