Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman took time out for the first council meeting of the new year to acknowledge all the work done by volunteers in her community.
“Today, Council would like to recognize all of the volunteers in our community; for without your contributions, a lot of our programs just would not happen.” she in her remarks to council at the meeting Monday evening.
“During the spring and summer, we see the Horticultural Society and friends tending to our gardens, we see track and field, baseball, soccer, basketball and pickleball coaches assisting and motivating players to exceed in their sport.
"During Community Days countless volunteers step up to provide the community with a parade, a car show, a car derby and fun events at the Town Park.”
“We are so lucky to have our Legion and Rotary representatives spearheading initiatives for the greater good of Blind River. We have our Youth leaders paving the way for our young people to try something different. We have our business community and merchants extending activities to Woodward Avenue,” she added.
“We see volunteers at the Museum, the Hospital Auxiliary and NSHN Foundation.
"We have volunteers working in the schools helping with the breakfast programs or class outings. There are football and hockey, figure skating and skiing volunteers not to forget the many people who are working behind the scenes to make Blind River a better place to live work and play.”
“The Blind River Food Bank volunteers, Meals on Wheels, Medical Transport and those who deliver soup to shut-ins are acknowledged and so appreciated.”
“We also have our witches,” she said of the popular Witches Dance that takes place each October along the main street and in conjunction with merchants' open house and displays. “We have the organizers of the Santa Claus parade.”
“I know that I am missing some groups but you know who you are.
"You as volunteers for the community of Blind River are the unsung heroes of this town. We appreciate you, we salute you and we thank you for making our town a place to be proud of. Miigwetch, Merci, Thank You.”
