Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman announced the hiring of a new director of public works at Tuesday’s council meeting.
“This week is National Public Works week and we are very grateful for our Town Public Works Department and all the work they do in in keeping our residents safe,” the mayor told council. “Mark Bender has been hired as the director of public services. On behalf of council welcome aboard Mark.”
The mayor also announced several events taking place in the community this week.
“The 696 Royal Canadian Air Cadets are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the squadron on Saturday, May 25,” she said. “The parade will leave the Legion at noon and travel across Hawkins Street to assemble in the parking lot at the Town Hall.”
She invited residents to attend the event for the squadron that has members from communities across the north shore and is home-based in Blind River.
“This is going to be a very exciting event as there is a lot of posturing prior to the request for the Town of Blind River to grant the RCACS Golden Wing Freedom of the Town of Blind River,” Mayor Hagman added.
She also invited residents to attend the official opening on Sunday, May 26, of the Blind River Timber Village Museum which has been relocated to the Blind River Marine Park. The opening starts at 1 p.m.
“The Museum Art Gallery is also open at its new location – the Upper Lounge at Blind River Marine Park. There is currently a showing of the art exhibit by (Elliot Lake artist) Lillian Asquith and we encourage everyone to come see the art display at the new location,” the mayor said.
The mayor also noted the raising of the Pride flag, celebrating Pride Week, will take place at noon this Friday at the information centre.
