Newly elected Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman is following her election promise of more council openness with an address for the first meeting of council in its four-year tenure.

Here are the mayor’s comments:

“Happy New Year everyone and welcome to the first Council meeting for 2019!

“We are on Mississauga First Nation land.

“Council is gearing up for a busy year and we have just hosted our first open forum tonight on the topic of Cannabis. This is an agenda item for tonight’s meeting.

“Since our last meeting, I visited the Grade 7/8 students at Blind River Public School and St. Mary’s Catholic School. Earlier I paid a visit to the students at Ecole St. Joseph. The intent of my visits is to hear the students’ views on what they would like to be engaged in within the community and how we can look at making these requests come to fruition. We will be reviewing these requests in the coming months and will be looking for volunteers to assist when and where possible.

“On Jan. 1, I attended the Levy hosted by Branch 189 of the Royal Canadian Legion. A breakfast was served and those in attendance received a lesson on the fallen soldier and how we could remember them. This was the first time that the Legion held a levy and those in attendance enjoyed the experience.

“On Tuesday, Jan. 15, Town Council is hosting a public information event at the Blind River Community Centre from 2-4 and again from 7-9. Informational topics came from you our residents and you will be seeing presentations from MPAC as they relate to the calculation of your taxes. There will be a presentation from the Building Department on what is required in obtaining a permit from building a shed to building a mansion! North Shore Power Group will be providing us with an update on their progress as well as an update on Plasco Conversion Technologies. Information will be provided on the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan and our next steps and last but not least Parks and Recreation will give you an overview on some exciting things that are happening in our community.

“I would encourage everyone to look at the Town of Blind River website as there is a lot of information there. I would also encourage you to email [email protected] if you want to be included an email mail out or post an event. There are more than 150 people receiving updates and the postings include events taking place in our community. It’s a great way to find out what’s going on!”
