Many flocked to Spruce Beach for Winterfest activities

Winterfest activities at Spruce Beach had residents' cheeks red from the fun.

With the sun shining and the weather being cooperative, many Elliot Lake residents took part in Winterfest activities at Spruce Beach, with some calling it "a great event for kids."

At Spruce Beach, event goers were treated to a horse drawn carriage, hot dogs, hot chocolate, dog sled rides, skating, sliding as well as some snow art.

Ten year-old Jasmine Marier, who travelled to Elliot Lake with her parents from Sudbury, said her favourite thing to do was skating.

"I enjoyed the skating the most because I want to be a figure skater so this gave me some practice," she explained. "People were friendly and you could see a lot of people were having fun."

Marc Galipeau, having fun with his three daughters, said the events at Spruce Beach were well planned and that his children looked to be having fun.

"I'm very happy the weather is cooperating this year and that we can stay longer today for the kids to get tired out," he said. "I can't wait until tomorrow for the races at the ski hill and to see some ski action. I love Winterfest."

Also having fun at the snowshoe trail at Mount Dufour Ski Hill, Barbara Englehart said this was going to be her exercise for the day with her granddaughter.

"My granddaughter loves the snow and loves snowshoeing," she said. "We do this at least once a year. It's some bonding time. I really think the city puts on a great Winterfest. I appreciate it so much."

A free dance at the Moose Lodge, hosted by AstroRabbit Entertainment takes place on Saturday evening.

Following today's events, there will be more activities for children to do Sunday at Mount Dufour ski hill: the Elliot Lake Ski Racers will be on the slopes, competing in the Joe Sarich Alpine Ski Race, the Sled Box Derby will begin at 3 p.m as wel as the fireworks display will begin at 7:30 p.m, or at dusk.
