Locals lament new recycling location (8 photos)

The bins have officially moved to Scott Road, which some point out will make it difficult for those without vehicles

As of 10 a.m today, the public recycling bins have been moved to the landfill site on Scott Road from Timber Road after the city got fed up with people dumping trash at the former site.

While setting up the bins at their new home, some residents told ElliotLakeToday.com they are not impressed with the way the city handled the situation and voiced their opinions to Public Works employees.

"This is not fair that we have to drive all the way down to this dump site," said Wayne Lalande. "This is ridiculous. If people would have just respected the bins in the first place, this wouldn't have happened."

Another resident voiced his concern that other residents will get tired of driving down to the new location and just dump their recyclables elsewhere.

"I don't think the city realizes that half of the people in this town don't drive," said Cheryl Vaillancourt. "How are they supposed to come here? Some people just won't recycle anymore and we have to see garbage all over this town."

When asked for comment, three Public Works employess only said they were "doing their job for what they're paid to do" and wouldn't comment any further.

The city made the decision to move the recycle bins from Timber Road to Scott Road due to the lack of cleanliness from residents in the area. Some residents feel it's not right that others be punished for others' decisions.

"Unfortunately, that priviledge has been abused, with household garbage being dumped in the bins," said councillor Tammy VanRoon on as to why the city made this decision. "This is the reason for the relocation."

A photo posted to social media recently showed what appeared to be a microwave oven dumped in one of the bins.

While some residents don't agree with the move, others feel it is a necessity.

"Sad that the few offenders spoil it for the whole town," said Lorraine Gareau. "I hope it works out."

Residents who wish to use these bins can do so at the landfill site on Scott Road between 10 a.m to 5 p.m Monday to Friday and 9 a.m to 5 p.m Saturdays.
