WATCH: Rapid COVID-19 tests coming to provinces, territories 'shortly'

The prime minister confirmed today that the federal government is continuing to provide surge support on processing tests and boosting testing capacity in response to COVID-19

Update:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a press conference today his government is continually working with the provinces and territories to boost testing capacity in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In late September, Health Canada approved a nasal swab for COVID-19 (Abbott ID NOW rapid tests) and Trudeau promised Canadians would be able to access the new test, which can deliver results within minutes, "in the coming weeks."

The prime minister confirmed today that 28.4 million rapid tests will be sent to the provinces and territories "shortly."

Trudeau also stated the federal government is providing surge support on processing tests.

In terms of financial assistance, applications opened yesterday for the Canada Recovery Benefit. This funding provides $500 per week for 26 weeks for those self-employed or who don't qualify for employment insurance.
