The Elliot Lake Lions Club will host its annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides virtually again this year, a fundraiser offering a dog guide to Canadians with a medical or physical disability.

The walk will begin on May 29. Anyone who wishes to participate is encouraged to register in advance and record walked kilometres as a part of the fundraiser.

“This (walk being virtual) is for two reasons," Elliot Lake Lion Robert Kerr says. "Due to the uncertainties of group size protocols during the prep time and not wanting to conflict with other local charitable activities."

“By participating in the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides you are ensuring icons Foundation of Canada Dog Guides can continue to fulfill our mission of empowering Canadians with disabilities to navigate their world with confidence and independence by providing Dog Guides at no cost to them and supporting each pair in their journey together,” he added. “The demand for specialty-trained Dog Guides continues to increase each year. With the support of our title sponsor of Pet Valu, volunteer walk organizers, participants and supporters across Canada, all proceeds from the dog walks go towards the seven dog guides programs; Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Services, Seizure Response, Autism Assistance, Diabetic Response and Facility Support.”

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of fundraising events and donations from service clubs, corporations, foundations and individuals across the country.

All Dog Guides, including training and accommodation at their school, are provided to qualified applicants at no cost

It costs approximately $35,000 to provide each dog and involves an intensive four-to-six-month training program.

You can join the local walk before May 29 by registering at their website. Under fundraisers, choose "Elliot Lake Lions Club."

Income Tax Receipts will be issued for all donations $20 and over.
