With a municipal election looming on Oct. 22, the current Blind River council wants to ensure whoever is elected has proper training to do the job.

Council, at its meeting Monday, voted to endorse an amendment to its bylaw that deals with remuneration and training of elected officials.

Six members of council, with only Councillor Clifford Spratt absent from the meeting, endorsed the amendment in a recorded vote.

The amendment will require those elected to council during next month’s vote to be trained about their responsibilities within six months of coming on council. Failure to take the training within the required time will result in “suspension of remuneration until such training is complete.”

Mayor Sue Jensen is seeking another term and is being challenged by Sally Hagman and Alex Solomon for the top political seat, while councillors HP Roy, Clifford Spratt, Jim Dunbar, Steven Wells and Paula Summers are seeking re-election with residents Robert Ambeault and Betty Ann Dunbar seeking election.

The new council will officially take the office on Dec. 1.
