The mayor of the Township of Hornepayne, Cheryl Fort, has been chosen by the Conservative Party of Ontario to contest the provincial riding of Algoma-Manitoulin on June 22.

She'll face incumbent New Democrat Mike Mantha who's going after his fourth term as the riding MPP, along with Liberal candidate Tim Vine.

"The Ontario PC party is proud to announce that Cheryl Fort has been nominated as our candidate for Algoma-Manitoulin ahead of the next provincial election," states a news release issued today. "Cheryl Fort was first elected in 2016 as town Councillor and was elected as Mayor of the Township of Hornepayne in 2018, becoming the second female Indigenous mayor to be elected in Ontario. Cheryl is also a locomotive engineer for the Canadian National Railway and serves as a northern zone director for the Ontario Good Roads Association."

"I am incredibly honoured to join Doug Ford’s team, who is dedicated to building northern Ontario and working to ensure a northern-lens is encompassed when working in our communities," Fort said in the release.

“Having served as mayor and being active within the community, I understand what issues matter most and I look forward to addressing them by having a seat at the table at Queen’s Park."
