Fatal crash closes Highway 17 East in both directions (Updated: highway reopened)

Update: 10 p.m.

Highway 17 between Iron Bridge and Blind River has reopened both lanes.

Update: 9:07 p.m.

Algoma East OPP report that, at 8:18 p.m., Highway 17 re-opened to one lane.

The investigation is continuing.

Update: 4:35 p.m.

Algoma East OPP responded to a two vehicle collision in the township of Huron Shores at approximately 1:26 p.m.

The collision, involving a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle, has resulted in the death of the driver of the passenger vehicle.

Algoma Paramedic Services and Huron Shores Fire Department are assisting with the investigation. 

The stretch of Highway 17 between Iron Bridge and Blind River is expected to be closed for several hours while police investigate.

East Algoma OPP is reporting a fatal two vehicle crash on Highway 17 between Iron Bridge and Blind River.

The highway remains closed.

Highway 17 East from Blind River through to Iron Bridge is closed to traffic. According to the Ministry of Transportation travel information website, the highway is closed in both directions and there is no detour.

SooToday attempted to contact the Ontario Provincial Police but was unable to reach anyone for comment.
