Students from Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion Catholic School collected donations for St. Vincent Place

Students from Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion Catholic School were out spreading kindness and joy in Elliot Lake last Thursday.

Known as the God Squad, the students delivered Christmas stockings to St. Vincent Place before helping out at the Foodland grocery store.

"The God Squad is a group of students who want to make the world a better place and strive to help others and spread kindness. Our goal of the flashmob was to spread Christmas cheer and instill in our students the importance of sharing kindness and helping others," stated a news release issued by Ashley Coventry and Renee Frolick, teacher coordinators of the God Squad.

"The response has exceeded our expectations which proves that sometimes a little act of kindness is the greatest gift you can give."

The God Squad dropped off 100 joyful socks at St. Vincent filled with toiletries and hygiene products for people in the community. The items were collected from each class at the school with students from Fatima school also taking part.

“It was a school-wide initiative driven by the God Squad, where each class was asked to bring in specific items to contribute to the socks,” Lourdes vice principle Nadia Zanatta said.

“Flashmob – it was known to the students as 'a secret mission' – led by Coventry, Frolick, and Marni Kay of OLOL,” Zanatta added.  “(Teacher) Vince Ucci was on site providing the music and recording. It was a complete surprise to the community of Elliot Lake.”
