Five-goal second period sinks Red Wings in road loss

The Espanola Express scored five times in the second period en route to a 7-3 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win over the Elliot Lake Red Wings on Saturday night.

Playing in the cozy confines of the Espabola Regional Recreation Complex, Espanola got onto the scoreboard first as forward Todd McBain beat Red Wings netminder Nolan Chartrand with a shorthanded goal at 7:42 of the first period.

It was the lone goal of the opening period.

Espanola forward Ty McHutchion scored a goal just 41 seconds into the second stanza, extending the Express lead to 2-0.

Just 32 seconds later McHutchion extended the lead further with a power play goal..

At 3:36, Espanola netminder Patrick Boivin couldn't stop a shot from Elliot Lake forward Cole Kimble, which finally put the Red Wings on the scoreboard.

Kimble potted one past Boivin on the power play 58 seconds later, cutting the Espanola lead to 3-2.

Brodie Kearns proceeded to tie the game at three, scoring for the Red Wings at 5:52.

The Express went ahead at 7:14 when defenceman Logan James beat Chartrand..

McHutchion scored his third of the night to make it 5-3 Espanola.

Express forward James Eng then scored at 19:29 of the second period, sending the game into the intermission with the Express leading 6-3. 

Espanola's Ben Couvier scored the only third period goal, scoring shorthanded into an empty net in the final minute of regulation time.

Express netminder Patrick Boivin was the winning goalie, stopping 40 Elliot Lake shots.

Nolan Chartrand took the loss for Elliot Lake making 30 saves..

Caleb Resch assisted on five goals for Espanola while Kibe Braham set up three goals.

Matthew Shulist assisted on a pair of goals for Elliot Lake.

Elsewhere in the NOJHL Saturday night, the Powassan Voodoos beat the Hearst Lumberjacks 3-2 in overtime.

The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners beat the Cochrane Crunch 4-3, also in overtime.

The next Red Wings game will be on the road again next Friday night against Soo (Mich) Eagles at 7 p.m. in Pullar Stadium.
