Firefighters receive $6,800 in donations during drive-thru Christmas collection

Money raised will go to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank to make holiday food purchases for those in need

Elliot Lake firefighters collected $6,800 in donations at Saturday’s drive-thru Christmas collection.

It is the second year firefighters have had to host a drive-thru collection due to COVID measures. The event was held under mostly sunny skies in the parking lot of the former civic centre off Highway 108.

Money raised will go to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank to make holiday food purchases for those in need.

Only cash donations were accepted.

Firefighter William Elliott said a final tally on how much was raised will come when all donations are counted.

Last year donations totalled $17,000.

“Yes, that was today’s number ($6,800) but there were donations dropped off earlier and some still coming in,” he told Elliot Lake Today after the drive-thru completed. “It looks like we will be well short of last year’s number, but every dollar helps.”
