After years of waiting, Elliot Lake residents will welcome a new doctor to the community later this year.

Elliot Lake Family Health Team Executive Director Nancy Ewen made the announcement in a news release this morning.

"The Elliot Lake Physician Recruitment Committee, the Elliot Lake Family Health Team, and St. Joseph’s General Hospital are delighted to announce Dr. Emery Nelson will be practicing Family Medicine in Elliot Lake. Dr. Nelson will be seeing patients currently receiving care at the Elliot Lake Family Health Team, as well as seeing inpatients commencing in September 2020."

"Dr. Emery Nelson grew up in Elliot Lake, she attended Elliot Lake Secondary School and is a graduate of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. She completed her training in Sudbury and came to Elliot Lake for a variety of placements during both medical school and residency. She finished her residency training in July 2019 and has most recently been covering a practice in Sudbury, Ont."

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Nelson back. The patients of the Elliot Lake Family Health Team and St. Joseph’s General Hospital will benefit greatly with the addition of this enthusiastic new physician to our medical staff."

"An additional thank you to our local recruitment support including: The City of Elliot Lake, Retirement Living, and ELNOS."

A recent estimate from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, said there are at least 1,300 unrostered patients in Elliot Lake.
