The Elliot Lake Renaissance Active Living Centre needs money.

The seniors recreational centre on Veteran's Way, which had been closed for three months due to COVID-19 protocols, will ask for $40,000 in a submission to the Elliot Lake City Council meeting in Committee of the Whole (COW) Monday night.

In her written submission seeking emergency funding, Renaissance Vice-President Val Spencer wrote, "We are a very important part of our 'Age Frìendly Community,' but without your financial assistance, we will be forced to close our doors once again.

"We are asking for $40,000 to cover our fixed expenses til the end of March 2021. Our fixed expenses are approximately $10,750 per month and do not take into account any building maintenance, janitorial or office supplies or fundraising expenses," Spencer also said in the letter.

"We continue our fundraising efforts with bingos, suppers, sale of lottery tickets for prizes, etc.

"We receive a quarterly grant in.the amount of $10,674.99 from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility, but the next quarterly payment is not due until January 2021.

"We are also in the process of applying for the Wage Subsidy Program,  but once again, the application is so complicated that it has not been submitted as yet," she concluded.

Spencer attached the not-for-profit charitable Ren Centre's financial statements with her report for council to examine.

In the six months stretch ending on Sept. 30, the Centre reported zero revenue from program user fees and $1,376 in club room user fees, compared with $14,407.25 and $6,320, respectively, during the same period last year. (pre COVID-19).

The Centre's doors were re-opened on July 20 after the three month closure due to the COVID-19 state of emergency proclaimed by Premier Doug Ford.

Spencer reported the membership, normally around 510, is down now by about 150.

The request will go to Council on Monday night at its Committee of the Whole meeting, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and held via Zoom

It will be livestreamed on the city website.
