Elliot Lake City Council ratifies report of 2020 remuneration topping $177K

At its virtual meeting on March 22, Elliot Lake City Council accepted a report from Director of Finance and Treasurer Amy Sonnenburg detailing $177,215 that the city paid for municipal remuneration in 2020.

That includes payments of $26,700, for individuals receiving outside pay and expenses by serving on boards not directly Council-related.

Mayor Dan Marchisella topped the individual payments with $44,100.98 including the mayor's taxable remuneration of $34,366.44 along with $6,742.81 for municipal medical benefits, $2,991.73 for municipal expenses of a cell phone, along with conference attendance, plus $1,088.88 for external board expenses. He received honoraria for boards he sits on of $500 and $5,000. 

The total received by Deputy Mayor Luc Cyr was $18,528.07 with Councillors Norman Mann at $19,359.06, Tom Turner getting $18,744.05,  Ed Pearce at $18,420.07, Sandy Finamore for $17,501.31, and Chris Patrie with $10,860.68. Councillor Patrie was docked pay after an Integrity Commissioner investigation.  

Coun. Mann was paid taxable remuneration of $10,337.28 plus $2,468.30 for municipal expenses and $6,553.48 for medical benefits. Coun. Turner received $18,744.05 including his taxable councillor pay of $10,337.28 plus $1,853.29 for municipal expenses and $6,553.48 in medical benefits.

Coun. Cyr was paid $18,528.07 which included the taxable council remuneration of $11,355.84 plus $610.56 for municipal expenses and $6,561.67 in medical benefits.

Coun. Pearce received a total of $18,420.07 including municipal and other expenses of $880.32 and $6,490.51 in medical benefits. He also chairs Algoma Public Health Board and sits on the Elliot Lake Police Services Board.

Coun. Finamore received $17,501.31 in total in 2020 including municipal expenses of $610.55, $6,553.48 in medical benefits and $10,337.28 in taxable remuneration.

Coun. Patrie was paid $10,860.68 comprised of taxable councillor remuneration of $4,307.20 plus $6,553.48 for medical benefits. He claimed no expenses from the city.

As for the outside boards, William Elliott, Gabriel Febres and Dan McCambridge all collected $250 each for their attendance at meetings of the Elliot Lake Residential Development Board. Pam Sarich received $150 for her participation.

On the Elliot Lake Police Services Board, Susan Hopkins-Landmark and Dennis Meeking each received $500 each for their attendance at board meetings.

Higher payouts came for those who served on the Algoma District Services Administration Board (ADSAB). Mayor Marchisella collected $6,088.88 for his efforts, Deputy Mayor Cyr received $5,766.66, Coun. Mann collected $7,988.88 for his participation, Coun. Patrie did get an ADSAB payday of $3,838.88, and Coun. Turner collected $2,250.

Reporting of the annual remuneration document is required under the Ontario Municipal Act.
