The City of Elliot Lake plans to lease the former site of Turner's in the Pearson Plaza to Elections Canada on a short term basis as a site to run the upcoming federal election in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing.

In a report to city council Monday night, city CAO Daniel Gagnon, noted, "As Council is aware, the city is contractually obligated to the landlord, McCowan and Associates, for the space formerly occupied by Turner’s store in the Pearson Plaza." He said, "The city subleased the 7,000 sq ft space to Turners in 2015 and the city remains as a tenant for that space for the balance of the initial lease term (to 2025, or until such time as a qualified tenant can fill the space."

He continued, "Efforts are ongoing by numerous stakeholders to secure a new tenant for the space that could relieve the city from its financial obligations and offer meaningful retail or services for the public. In the meantime, the city was approached by the local returning office of Elections Canada to rent space for the upcoming federal election, beginning Sept. 1, 2019." Gagnon added, "Time is off the essence since the returning officer only approached the city very recently when efforts to secure other space proved unsuccessful."

Gagnon concluded, "The landlord has consented to the city subletting the former Turner’s space for 90 days beginning Sept. 1, 2019. Elections Canada is offering $9,000 plus applicable taxes, which covers the majority of the monthly rent of approximately $10,000."

Turner's closed its store and vacated the space earlier this year.

A bylaw is needed to authorize the city to lease the space to Elections Canada.
