Clean up of Algo Centre Mall site underway (6 photos)

Efforts are underway to remove a large piece of old equipment which has been on the site for sometime

More than five years after the collapse of the Algo Centre Mall – a tragedy that claimed two lives – the City of Elliot Lake says it is actively pursuing all ways it has to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the old derelict property in the city's downtown. Efforts are underway to remove a large piece of old equipment which has been on the site for sometime and is deemed a hazard.

Elliot Lake's Chief Administrative Officer Dan Gagnon tells ElliotLakeToday, "The city will use all municipal legislation available to ensure the site is safe and clean and will continue to act accordingly until the site complies with our property standards bylaw and any other relevant bylaws."

He adds that residents are asked to be patient while the removal of excavator process is ongoing and, for their own safety, refrain from accessing the site.

Cleanup of the Algo Centre Mall site and a drive for Elliot Lake to gain control of the property has been a familiar theme for a number of candidates running for a spot on Elliot Lake city council in upcoming municipal election.
