City will glow with events for Uranium Heritage Days

Bands, BBQ and beer included in the weekend roster of events

One of Elliot Lake’s most popular events, Uranium Heritage Days, will be take place this July long weekend.

Sponsored by the city, the events range from family-friendly activities for all ages and live music events spread throughout the community.

The annual parade will start at the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre at noon on Saturday. The ever-popular parade is expected to have many entries sponsored by businesses, schools and community clubs and groups. It will wind its way through the downtown and end at the Collins Hall.

Once at the Collins Hall, people can take in another popular event – the Lions Western Jamboree which features music, a barbecue and beer garden. The jamboree runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with free admission. The Lions Club is also holding a garage sale earlier in the day.

There is a street dance set for the lower plaza on Saturday evening with four bands set for the stage, including Celine Tellier and her band and Credence Clearwater Revival tribute band Green River Revival. Tickets at the door for those 19 and over are $33.90. There will be a cash bar.

The dance starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m.

Fun activities and entertainment will be the main features on Sunday, Canada Day, with a beach party at Spruce Beach starting at noon. Organizers are promising a full array of events in the afternoon along with refreshments and food.

A fireworks display will be held overhead at Westview Park. Prior to the display there will be a barbecue and music provided by a DJ. It’s always recommended to have mosquito repellent when attending this evening event.

Monday will see the Algoma Paddlers from Blind River bring their huge Montreal canoe to the old beach on Spine Road. People attending the event will be offered free rides in the 36-foot canoe between 3 and 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the Stage Door Players are putting on free show at the civic centre theatre to close out the weekend events.
