In an electronic meeting of her riding association Thursday night, New Democrat MP Carol Hughes was nominated to run for a fifth term in the Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing federal riding.

After the meeting, she made an announcement via social media.

"Pleased to have been nominated and acclaimed as the candidate for the riding of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing this evening," Hughes said.

"Truly appreciate the ongoing support and trust that members have given me, as well as the opportunity to hopefully be able to continue to represent the people of AMK in bringing their voices and concerns to parliament.

"Huge shout out to Canada’s NDP/Le NPD du Canada leader Jagmeet Singh for Prime Minister for joining me and AMK NDP Federal Riding Association members this evening."

First elected in 2008, Hughes won the last election on Oct. 21, 2019.

If she is successful next time she will be back for her fifth term as AMK's representative in the House of Commons. She has been the sitting member in the riding for more than 12 years and four months.

In the last election, Hughes triumphed by capturing 42 per cent of the popular vote in a six-way race.

Manitoulin Island's Dave Williamson ran second for the Conservatives with 26 per cent of the vote.

Hughes becomes the first announced candidate in A-M-K for the next federal election. It is set for on or before Oct. 16, 2023.

It could come sooner if the minority Trudeau government loses support of the New Democrats on a key vote in the House of Commons.
