Students from Blind River’s six schools have been skiing the trails as part of World Snow Day celebrations.

Snow Day is held in January each year to enjoy snow-related events and benefits to health.

“For five years, the Blind River Cross Country Ski Club has participated in World Snow Day, which takes place each January," said club member Sally Hagman. “Unfortunately, with the pandemic, the club’s participation had to be put on hold for two years. When the World Snow Day organizers asked what the club needed to promote the event, the answer came back as busing as students needed to be transported to and from the Boom Camp Trails. The World Snow Day organizers granted this wish and provided the club with $500. The stage was set.”

An invitation was sent out to all six schools to participate, and every school responded with a resounding 'yes' to take advantage of using the trails at no cost. The club outfitted everyone with skis, boots and poles and a quick lesson before heading out to take part in physical activity, fresh air and scenic trails.

“Special thanks goes out to the Ski Club volunteers for putting the 'fun' back into winter,” Hagman said of members who assisted. “Hopefully, some of these students will sign up for the Learn to Ski and Biathlon Programs offered each season.”

It’s estimated that over 333 students have experienced cross-country skiing on the Boom Camp Trails as part of Snow Day celebrations.
