Blind River snow budget plowed over

CAO clerk speculates budget will be more than 64 per cent over by the time winter finally ends

A winter with heavy snow is taking its toll on Blind River’s snow removal budget and it’s not over yet.

Town CAO clerk Katie Scott is anticipating record snowfalls so far this year have impact on the snow budget as it is drafted as part of current budget deliberations.

According to Scott, the town budgeted $151,650 for its 2018 snow budget and finished under budget at $133,413 with the balance moved to a winter control reserve fund. The snow budget for February came in at 64 per cent over what was paid out in snow removal wages for the same month a year ago.

The town has seen additional costs in extra time needed to safely clear snow from streets and intersections.

“I can speculate that as we are not finished with winter we will be above by more than 64 per cent,” Scott said.
